The jalebis play a pivotal role in the story. They are the sweet temptation that the young school boy gives in to. He spends his fees money in buying jalebis for himself and for other street children. The distribution of jalebis makes him feel important. He enjoys them thoroughly. But, they create problems for him: the first is indigestion! his young strong digestive system deals with that and he is fine in the morning. But, the jalebis have made him spend the precious fees money and he pays fro that dearly! His scholarship money, which was supposed to save him, would be paid next month. Eventually, his absence from school is reported at home and he is caught! Jalebis almost become another character in the story: tempting the boy, giving him a confidence boost with popularity, troubling him and then bringing him punishment. The use of clever words makes the whole narration rather humorous and funny

Answer:

Jalebis are central to the story. These are hot , fresh, and syrupy. A school boy falls to the sweet temptation of Jalebis. He spends all his school fees money in buying jalebis. He eats himself and also distributes them among children. He regrets his weakness later. He prays to God to send him four rupees. but he gots no help from God. He realises in later life that God cannot meet everybody 's demand. Were he so generous , man would not have developed the skill of making Jalebis.
