A story's theme is the main point the author is trying to get across to the reader. In some stories the theme is explicit, and in some stories the theme implicit. Explicit themes are themes that are stated clearly in the story by the author.
A good example of explicit themes would be Aesop's fables. In every fable he writes, Aesop gives a moral or theme that he wants his readers to understand. In "The Tortoise and the Hare" the explicit theme is "slow but steady wins the race".
Implicit themes, on the other hand, are more difficult to find. They are hidden by the author, and the reader has to deduce them. A careful reading of the story is essential to find an implicit theme. A good example of an implicit theme is the fairy tale "Beauty and the Beast". The theme of this story would be that appearances can fool you, and it is what is on the inside that counts.
A story's title may or may not reflect the theme. The author could have any one of a million reasons why they chose a certain title. Often, however, the title at least hints at the theme.
