The subject of the poem is snowfall and how it lays atop the ground. Longfellow is conveying how the snow falls, but with a sadder tone to it. He also describes how the snow fell on every forest and field. The poem to me has a combination of a relaxing atmosphere and a melancholy tone.The relaxing atmosphere is created by the words "silent, and soft, and slow." The melancholy feeling develops with the words "troubled" and "grief." When I see snowflakes falling, I always feel content, and admire the beauty of how graceful it always falls.
