The voice of education makes the poet to think that the golden-brown snakes are poisonous and hence they should be killed.It made him to throw the wooden log at the snake which later aroused a sense of regret in his mind.

The narrator was actually wanting to harm the snake with respect to the civilised education that the poet recieved. The poet listens to his voice of education and hits the snake with a wooden log.
For one moment, when the snake was leaving, he did not want the snake to return, so he threw a log at it although he immediately regretted doing that action.
In Sicily he was taught that the gold snakes were venomous. That is why he tried to harm it.
