Evaporation is a process of cooling.
It us a surface phenomenon. The molecules on the surface absorb the heat from the bottom layers and attain the energy to change into vapour and escape into the atmosphere. So the surface molecules are absorbing the heat from the surface thus decreasing the temperature. So it is s cooling process

For example:
After we sweat we feel cool because the sweat which is formed on our body absorbs the heat from our body, turns into vapour and escapes into the atmosphere, decreasing our body temperature. So we feel cool.
