Theme of love and revenge in Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights is one of the most popular romantic novels with a Gothic undertone. The young novelist 'Emily Bronte' had most dexterously spun a tale of love and revenge through the great novel.

The main theme of the novel is love and the revenge associated with it. The foundling Heathcliff was madly in love with his foster father-Earnshaw's lovely daughter Catherine.

Catherine too was madly in love with Heathcliff. She considered that Heathcliff and herself were actually one soul in two bodies. But in the case of marriage she chose to marry the rich Edgar Linton over Heathcliff.

This led to the extreme hatred of Heathcliff towards all associated with Catherine. After Catherine's marriage to Edgar , Heathcliff made it his mission to seek revenge on Catherine and all associated with her.

The ardent lover slowly changed into a wrathful monster. Once Catherine dies during child birth, giving birth to a baby girl, Heathcliff goes on a vengeful rampage.

Through clever manipulation Heathcliff slowly kills all the family members of Catherine and her husband. Edgar's  sister Isabella, Catherine's brother -Hindley were all in his hit list.

Through minute planning, Heathcliff tortures them to death and slowly takes the possession of both Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights. Slowly he seeks revenge on all he despised.

But the end of the novel again returns to love when Heathcliff's soul unites with the soul of Catherine . Death once again unites the two inseparable lovers, thus cementing the theme of love and revenge.
