Diamond have linked carbon structure which explains its hard and strong characteristics

Graphite at the same time, has layered structure and it soft and smooth.

And coal is a complex compound.

I had no idea how they were related so I did some search and to my surprise,

trees use the carbon from carbon dioxide to make sugar molecules. Woody tissue and bark of trees comprise most of a tree's biomass. Wood and bark is made of cellulose, which contains carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atom.

If you asked if wood is an odd one, it is. But if asked about their commons this maybe the answer.
