p- block elements show alternate oxidation states. This happens because p has 3 orbitals. And as p orbital is far from the nucleus that the electrons are not as tightly bound to the atom as are the s orbital electrons, and so p orbital electrons they can be removed from the atom. This gives p block elements positive oxidation states. Also, because of empty orbitals, these elements can also accept electrons to attain negative oxidation states.
