The excerpt has been taken from the story Old Man at the Bridge written by Ernest Hemingway.

In this story, the civilians who are mostly refugees are seen fleeing from their places as there is a war going on in their place and the enemy troops are attacking them.

The story shows how the common people become the victims of war and they have to flee their homes and leave everything behind and run away in the fear of attack from the enemies.
The people have to give up on their animals, the little property and house which they were living and flee to a new place in search of a livelihood and start a new life in an unknown place again from scratch.

Answer:

"Old Man at the Bridge" shows the devastating impact that war can have on people, especially innocent civilians. As the story opens, thousands of refugees are making their way to safety across a hastily constructed pontoon bridge. ... This is what war does to people—it turns their whole lives upside down.
