Commonly we hear words like 'first wave', 'second wave', 'third wave'. what this word "wave" mean if we talk in context of pandemic?​

The second wave means it went outta control again and the cases rose to a peak once more momentarily.

Now if the cases started decreasing it will mark the end of second wave.

How quickly people are dead etc. There are many reason to say the 'first wave', 'second wave', 'third wave'.
