ACT NO. 1 OF 1956 [ 18th January, 1956]

An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to companies and certain other associations.

BE it enacted by Parliament in the Sixth Year of the Republic of India as follows---





1. Short title, commencement and extent.

(1) This Act may be called the Companies Act, 1956 .

(2) It shall come into force on such date 2 as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.

(3) 3 It extends to the whole of India: 4 ] 5 Provided6 that it shall apply to the State of Nagaland subject to such modifications, if any, as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify.]

A Company formed under the Companies Act 1956 is called as a Company and this is provided in the section 3 of this Act that Company means any company formed under this act or nay other Companies.

The following are the types of companies which can be formed under a Companies Act:

1) Public Company

2) Private Company

3) Holding Company

4) Subsidiary Company

5) Limited Company

6) Unlimited Company

The Limited Companies may be limited by shares or by guarantee. Such companies may be limited privately or public limited.
