Aurangzeb reversed the policy of Akbar of religious toleration and thus udermined the loyalty of the Hindus to the empire.
Aurangzeb was an othodox Sunni Muslim who did not have faith on the other religions except his own.
In this respect, he was just the opposite of his great grandfather Akbar. Akbar had taken liberal stand in the matter of religion as a result he obtained the support of the Hindus. Aurangzeb abandoned the wisdom of Akbar and he followed a rigid Islamic policy which annoyed the Hinds who constituted the main bulk of the society.
