Hi,

The differences are as follows;

Properties Alkali Metals Halogens Valency 1+ 1- Nature of their oxides They form basic oxides as they are metallic oxides The form acidic oxides as they form non-metallic oxides. Atomic size Bigger than the halogens Comparatively smaller than the metals.

As there is transfer of electrons taking place (accepting and donating of electrons) they form ionic compounds

HOPE THIS ANSWER is helpful!!

Halogens and Alkali metals have a valency of 1. Alkali metals lose their 1 electron whereas halogens gain one electron.

EXPLANATION:

The atomic size of 'alkali metals' is larger than that of halogens. Halogens and alkali metals both form oxides. However, alkali metals form 'basic oxides' halogens form acidic oxides. Alkali metals and halogens form ionic compounds because there is exchange of ions between them when they react with each other.
