Antonio was bound to help Bassanio because of his friendship with him. To meet the urgent needs of his friend, Antonio signed the humorous bond with Shylock. Since he had neither money nor any valuable possessions, Antonio had no other option to help his spendthrift friend.

Portia, a beautiful daughter, bound by the will of her dead father. She was in a miserable condition, where she couldn't decide her future husband. It was all dependant on her father's will. Just like Antonio, she too didn't have any choice, except to wait and see the results.

Both of them were in a situation of deadlock, with the only choice of acceptance.
