The differences between Bhaktism and Sufism were:

1. Bhakti movement first started in south India in the 7th and 8th centuries. It tried to bridge the gap between the Shaivas and the Vaishnavas. Sufi mystic traditions became popular during the 10th and 11th centuries in Delhi during the Sultanate period.

2. Bhakti movement was mainly followed by the Hindus. Sufism
had a greater impact on the Muslims.

3. The saints of the bhakti movement sang bhajans to worship
Gods and Goddesses. Sufi saints expressed their devotion and gave religious inspiration through qawwalis.

A Comparison: Much of what the Sufism taught was very similar to the Bhakti teaching of concentrating upon God and the significance of sacred music and song. This interaction between the two led to the creation of a medieval mysticism which disclaimed particularly caste practices and atrocities. The first Sufi teacher who came to India was, Khwaja Muinuddin Chisti, who arrived in Delhi in 1193 and settled in Pushkar in Ajmer. He had both Hindu and Muslim followers.
