At the beginning of the chapter, Buck had a nice and calm environment. He loved his house and he loved to play with the children. He had no worries, he was loved and he loved his environment. He was the leader. At the end of the chapter, Buck's not the leader anymore and isn't in charge. He is mistreated and abused and not loved. He is scared and mad. He was hit with a club and not used to the new environment. This affects Buck's development because he now has to fight to survive. He has to be the fittest to survive in this new harsh environment. He realizes that he is no longer the king and he has no one to feed him and love him.
