Carter used a chisel to break away the hardened resin from around King Tut’s mummy and damaged it in the process. Zahi Hawass, the Secretary General of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities described the mummy, saying it was in a very bad condition. Thus we can say that his method of investigation was crude and invasive.
Modern day researchers used a CT machine to create a three dimensional image of King Tut’s mummy. The mummy was put inside the machine, and a series of digital X-rays were taken. Each X-ray was 0.62 millimetres thick, and a total of 1700 cross-sectional images were taken. When these X-ray images were put together, a complete three dimensional image was formed. The image showed, with amazing clarity, every minute aspect of the mummy’s body. Compared to Carter’s method, the modern day method was non-invasive and caused no further damage to the mummy.
