Cotton is the soft padding around the seeds of the cotton plant, whereas jute comes from the tough fibers holding up the stalks of the jute plant. Since these fibers come from different parts of different plants they have quite different jobs in nature - the cotton fibers are basically nature’s packing peanuts, so they are quite delicate, soft, and fluffy. Jute fibers have to be strong enough to withstand storm and wind, so they are rather coarse and stiff.


Jute is used for things like heavy rope and burlap - not something you’d want next to your skin! For a fabric made from the strong fibers of a plant stalk that isn’t as coarse as jute, you could use hemp or linen. They are made from different plants (hemp and flax, respectively) but have much finer fibers than jute does so they are quite comfortable
