Reflection:

To complete this assignment, I used Lucidchart in Google Drive.  I did not have the time to learn how to use Mindomo, bubbl.us, or Creately.  Although this was the first time I have used Lucidchart, this was one of the apps we covered in one of our workshops in  IEASC 902.  I felt comfortable using this.  I will also be sharing this with my students so that they can use this in their collaborative groups.

I created my Venn Diagram with all three types of instruction, as there are still many classrooms in my district that use the face to face method as the primary and sole method of instruction.   Although some of the teachers in my district, myself included, have started flipping at least one class,  the majority of the teachers are still not sure what a flipped classroom is, or how to go about flipping a classroom.  For this reason, I felt it was important to create a comparison of all three.  It is my plan to use this visual as a starting point for the opening dialogue of stepping into the arena of blended learning.  I can see the application of this in many of our classrooms.  I believe that we have teachers ready to make this step.  All they need is someone to light the way.  I want to be that someone!

As our students, especially at the middle school have lived in a world rich in media with frequent changes in focus,  I believe that our classroom instruction needs to match this pattern so that we can get the attention of our students for a deeper level of engagement with the content.  If we cannot achieve this first step, we will have a more difficult time of getting them to deeper levels of learning and understanding.  So many of our students have very busy schedule after school with sports, FFA, music or dance lessons, etc, we need to be able to offer them a blended approach to learning as well as the demonstration of their learning through projects or other creative type of assignments that demonstrate their level of understanding of the topics.  When students are absent, a blended learning  classroom provides them with the flexibility to keep up with the content covered in class that day.

In thinking back to my time as a graduate student at Mississippi State University as I worked on my Master's degree in geosciences, I experienced a completely online learning environment for the first time.  I quickly realized how much I missed the interaction of the classroom discussion in the online format.  However, after forming a study group which met weekly, or more frequently if needed, via Skype, I was able to marry the benefits of the flexibility of the online  program with the stimulating discussions and interactions of other students.  I can see how this aspect would be beneficial for a completely online program.  I also realize the need for student interactions for discussions of class content.   It is this student to student and teacher to student interaction that is critical for deeper levels of understanding which will then lead to greater student success.

As a teacher in a 21st century world,  I want to be sure that I am fully preparing my students to be contributing members of the 21st century.  I cannot rely on 19th and 20th century skills to best prepare my 21st century learners.  I need to make sure that my teaching skills are also evolving along with the new technologies that are now and will continue to be essential in the  competitive global economy in which my students will be living in the future.
