Internal memory is usually chips or modules that you attach directly to the motherboard. Internal ROM is a circular disc that continuously rotates as the computer accesses its data. External memory often comes in the form of USB flash drives; CD, DVD, and other optical discs; and portable hard drives.

- Internal memory is the memory of a computer which is usually in-built within the computer itself. A computer consist of RAM and ROM modules within it which is considered as internal memory.
- External memory is a memory device that can be externally connected to the computer. Examples are USB flash drive, CD-ROM, DVD, etc. These are ROM devices.
- Internal memory has a finite amount of memory, whereas external memory can be increased easily with addition of storage devices.
- Internal memory, once connected to the computer usually cannot be easily removed, however external memory devices can be removed from one computer and connected to another computer easily.
