Explanation:
I have always had a hard time interpreting pomes, so I decided to compare and contrast the Mulan from Kingston’s story to Disney’s Mulan that I saw as a little kid. There were several distinct similarities between the story of Mulan told by Disney and the one told by Kingston. For one, they both depict Mulan as a courageous woman warrior who had absolutely no fear in taking her father’s place in the Chinese army. Another similarity I noticed was that their are consequences Mulan would have had to face if her secret had been revealed; however, the punishments or consequences that would befall Mulan in the Disney version differ severely from the consequences that Mulan from Kingston’s story would have had to face. Simply put the punishment in Disney’s movie would be considered a slap on the wrist in comparison to the punishment mentioned on page 39. “Chinese executed women who disguised themselves as soldiers or students, no matter how bravely they fought or how high the scored on the examinations.” The differences in the two stories do not end there. For example Kingston’s story says that Mulan followed the birds up a mountain as a little girl,(page 20) where she would meet an old man and an old woman(page 21) who would train her until she became strong enough to avenge the weak.(page 32) The Mulan from the Disney movie had no prior training or preparation to the training she received after joining the Chinese army. One last difference that I would like to point out is her lover. In Kingston’s story her childhood friend weds her while she is in the mountains training, while in Disney’s version Mulan weds a general of the Chinese army after returning from her services. The story of Mulan told by Kingston and the story told by Disney are very different, but also very similar in that it depicts a woman’s endless will to protect the ones she love and the ones that can not fend for themselves.
