The Prince of Morocco was very arrogant during the selection of the caskets.

Explanation:

  • The Prince of Morocco, in Merchant of Venice, came all over from Morocco to Belmont to woo Portia.  The Prince of Morocco was one of the initial suitors of Portia.
  • He was a tall dark man of Morocco.  He was very proud of his status and position.  In his vanity he became rather arrogant.
  • When the Prince of Morocco was led to the three caskets- one of gold, the other silver and the last lead, he was a little overconfident of his choice.
  • For the gold casket it was written that those who deserved the best should choose this. For the silver casket the message read that he would win as much as he deserved and the lead casket told that that he would have to give away his all and also undertake risks.
  • The Prince became very overconfident and arrogant. Due to his narrow-mindedness and judgemental nature, he chose the gold casket going by just physical and outward appearances.
  • He had to leave empty-handed thus. According to him lead was a base material and was very cheap. The prince thought that his worth was of gold and that he should get more than what he deserved. This foolishness of his led him to defeat. His reasoning was replete with arrogance.
  • He thought that he would not settle for less and that due to his high worth, only the gold casket, according to him, contained Portia’s picture. Therefore this vile thought of his brought his downfall.
