Mr Otis was a honest man and he considered that the jewels that were given to Virginia by ghost belonged to the family heirlooms of Lord Canterville. He gave a long speech to Lord Canterville showing his Puritan beliefs.
Lord Canterville refused to take the jewels after his speech saying that Mr Otis had taken the house at his valuation. As he was unaware of the jewels so they belong to Miss Virginia.
