Answer:

Mohan Lal and Lachmi are diametrically opposite characters .They are married couple.Sir Mohan Lal is a vizier , a barrister. He has a degree from the Oxford University .He wears Balliol tie, speaks English fluently and reads The Times, the British newspaper. His wife Lachmi is a typical Indian woman .She is short and plump in appearance. Mohan Lal hates everything of India . He hates his wife too .He is more attracted even to the prostitutes of Piccadilly than his wife. Mohan Lal is proud and arrogant . Lachmi is simple and unsophisticated. When Mohan Lal drinks whiskey Lachmi takes chapatries with Mango-pickle . They make their journey in the same train. Mohan Lal goes in the first- class but Lachmi in the zenana inter- class . Eventually Mohan Lal is found to have been flung out of the train by two British soldiers. The rejection symbolizes that Mohan Lal has lost his identity. He is neither an Indian nor an English. His wife Lachmi has no such crisis and happy with her Indian counterparts.
