Bradstreet wrote positive poems on the topic of progress and development whereas Wheatley wrote on anti-slavery topics which had a negative tone.

- Anne Bradstreet was a daughter of a Governor and married the following Governor of Massachusetts.
- Phillis Wheatley was captured, enslaved and sold to Mr. John Wheatley.
- Anne was the first female poet to publish in America while Phillis was the first black female poet to publish there. Both were classical poets.
- Anne's poems were out of her day to day life experiences whereas Phillis's poems were religious based on Christianity and pilgrimages.
