In the Tell-Tale Heart is a short story Edgar Allan Poe, the narrator is unreliable by nature, a crazy narrator who cannot tell a story objectively since he justifies his actions all through the text.

Explanation:

  • "The Tell-Tale Heart" is written from the first person viewpoint  all through; however, the narrator's personal viewpoint as regards his feelings and his tone concerning the events that he narrates, certainly changes quite considerably.
  • At the start, the narrator is calm and controlled. Towards the story's ending, he is erratic and is unable to remain calm in his re-telling of the events. This contradicts the fact that he's not crazy. Thus, throughout the course of the story, the mind and mental state of the narrator unravels.
  • That is, throughout the outset of the story the narrator says he's not "insane," but perfectly sane. When it continues, the reader discovers that he is truly crazy and, as a result, becomes an untrustworthy narrator. The narrator's misleading perceptions offer the viewer a frightening image of a profoundly sadistic individual and intensify the overall chilling tone of the author.
  • To be able to see the contrast of the narrator's viewpoint, it is essential to check the beginning of the story. Here the author gives a definition of the character. He defines and sets the story. It is vital to remember that one of the traits in Poe's stories is the use of preoccupation, terror, and anxiety. Perhaps from Poe´s personal life or own experience
  • Towards the end, the story is in contrast from what he had described  at the start as a "blessing". The narrator was able to hear and see everything; however, it was precisely this "capability" that transported him to a terrible situation of horror and anxiety, that led him to confess the crime which he had committed
