The principal difference between bony fish and cartilaginous fish is in the skeleton makeup. As previously mentioned, bony fish have a bone skeleton whereas cartilaginous fish have a skeleton made of cartilage. There are, however, several other differences between these two classes of fish

Answer:

The gills of Osteichthyes are situated on the side of the skull. They only have three pairs of gills. The gills of Osteichthyes are guarded by a bone called operculum. The operculum also acts as a facial support structure.

On the other side, Chondrichthyans have five to seven pairs of gills. Some species like chimaeras and skates use their mouths to flow water through their gills whereas rays use small holes on the top of their heads called spiracles to flow water through their gills.
