The Cavite Mutiny of 1872 has two extant versions coming from two opposing camps namely:

Spanish version and Filipino version.

The Spanish version of Cavite Mutiny of 1872 is narrated by Jose Montero y Vidal.

  • His account is based on the thesis that the event took place on the 20th of January 1872 and occured due to the prolonging series of dissatisfaction existing between native soldiers and laborers of Cavite arsenal who finally revolted to overthrow the Spanish rule, and was thus, guilty of rebellion.

The Filipino version is told by Trinidad H. Pardo de Tavera.

  • His version of mutiny is based on a mere incident of mutiny started by native soldiers and laborers who reacted to rutheless policy which was implemented by the new governor-general, Rafael de Izquierdo, who terminated the old privileges of exempting them from paying annual tax and from forced labor.

As from both the views it is made clear that the mutiny by the Spanish officials and friars was nothing but a way for Filipinos to gain independence from Spanish monarchy that existed.
