A Comparison of Speeches by Brutus and Antony in William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar
This historic play which was written by William Shakespeare in the 16 century as a play is in fact based on older history dating back to time before Christ. When the roman empire was the most powerful in the world and a man named Julius Caesar was the roman statesman and general who ruled it.
Mark Antony was well aware that emotions could stir people and appealed to the basic sentiments of the mob. He used different strategies to lead the people to mutiny. His each and every statement was proved with appropriate evidences. He showed them Caesar's will but took time to read it provoking people's anticipation. He also emphasises on the fact that Caesar was not ambitious and the conspirators had done a great wrong. He repeats that the conspirators are honourable men. This made the people think that he had no fit of anger against the conspirators.
Brutus speech was just to prove why Caesar was killed. He was not able to produce an everlasting impact on the people's minds with his words. He did not have appealing arguments. Though at first people believed his words later they changed their minds because of the lack of evidence. Brutus spoke in prose whereas Antony spoke in verse.
