Compare and contrast the theme of the poems ‘The Frog and the Nightingale’ by Vikram Seth and ‘The Fly and the Spider’ by Mary Howitt in 150 words.
Elucidate the values learnt and pick out five poetic devices used in each
Answer:
Both the poems are somewhat similar in nature. They both portray the torture and exploitation imposed on innocent victims by wicked adversaries. But this remains as the lone similarity.
Vikram Seth’s poem, “Frog and the Nightingale” depicts the torments inflicted by the frog on the nightingale. It was out of sheer professional envy.
When the nightingale sings, she is praised by all the fellow creatures of the jungle. Getting jealous of her fast gaining popularity, the frog conspires to cut short her singing prowess.
He assumes the form of a trainer and denounces her singing capability. He proposes to the nightingale to be her trainer, which the innocent being readily accepts.
He makes the nightingale sing and practice for extended hours in rain, which causes her unfortunate death and paves the way for the frog to achieve success and recognition.
In “The Fly and the Spider” poem, the exploitation happens not because of jealousy. It arises due to hunger. The spider likes devouring flies to satisfy its hunger. The spider invites the fly to its house and in a bid to trap it. The fly refuses initially knowing about the spider’s vile motives.
But the spider sings eloquently about the fly which finally forces the fly to surrender to the spider.
