“Sonnet 18” and “Ozymandias”- a comparative study

“Sonnet 18” and “Ozymandias” are two very famous sonnets. “Sonnet 18” was composed by the legendary William Shakespeare while “Ozymandias” was written by the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

The two sonnets have a similar theme. They are based on the transience of Time. Both the sonnets reflect the temporariness of Life, its mortality and its short life.

However the tone of both the sonnets are different. “Sonnet 18” is in a soft and romantic tone. It speaks of love and immortalisation of love through poetry.

“Ozymandias” on the other hand follows a harsher tone. Instead it speaks of the heartlessness of Time. It describes how a statue of the famous and tyrannic Emperor -Ozymandias is reduced to ruins with time.

Though both the poems are sonnets yet the structure of these sonnets are different. Ozymandias is a Pertrarchan sonnet. It has an octet of eight lines followed by a sestet of six lines.

Sonnet 18 on the other hand is an Elizabethan sonnet of the Shakespearean sonnet category. It has three quatrains of four lies each followed by a couplet of two lines.

Both the sonnets use similar literary devices, such as visual Imagery, metaphors, symbols, irony to describe the nature of Time.
