. In the 7th & 8th centuries AD the Arab Empire was established. The Arabs conquered large lands inspired by "Prophet Mohammed", the founder of the "Islamic faith". The Empire stretched from Spain, North Africa and Asia as far as India, to its height.

• The Arab empire experienced a "golden age" in the following centuries, when Islamic astronomers, mathematicians, doctors, & inventors made major breakthroughs. Arab traders traded commodities across & between the Mediterranean Sea & Africa & Asia on board ships called "dhows".

Ottoman Empire

One of the most dominant & "longest-lasting dynasties" in world history, the Ottoman empire. For over 600 years, this "Islamic superpower" had ruled vast areas throughout the Middle East, North Africa, & Eastern

Europe. The king, called the Sultan, was granted full religious and political power over the people. While for 600 years, the Ottoman

Empire flourished, despite attempts to modernize, the empire steadily declined. In the 1700s & 1800s, whereas the industrial revolution had swept thru Europe, the Ottoman economy was only reliant on agriculture. The mills & mills did not exist in the Empire. The Ottomans' empire lagged well behind in literacy amid attempts to boost education in the 1800s, only five and ten percent of its people could read by 1914.
