The Imperial Chola rulers of Tanjore developed the Dravidian style of temple architecture almost to perfection. Their works taken up on a stupendous scale include irrigation schemes, embankment of artificial lakes, dams across the Kaveri and well planned cities.

Mughal architecture is the distinctive Indo-Islamic architectural style that developed in northern and central India under the patronage of Mughal emperors from the 16th to the 18th century. It is a remarkably symmetrical and decorative amalgam of Persian, Turkish, and Indian architecture.

Architectural style of cholas and mughals

  • Cholas' style of architecture was more prevalent in the southern parts of India and Srilanka. The cholas' were predominantly worshipers of Hindu Gods and they build a lot of temples in and around their dynasty.
  • The Pragadeeshwar temple, the tower of the temple was chiseled out of a single rock. Although they have build many temples, there is no standing evidence for the King's palace, as they were ruined by invasions.
  • On the other hand the Mughal architecture, involved a lot of Mosques and tombs depicting Islamic style. The famous Tajmahal, Humayun's tomb are some of the standing examples. They were mostly concentrated in the northern part of India including the current Delhi, Agra and Punjab states.
