Both are simply generators of alternating current. Let us take both separately.
Synchronous generators (otherwise called alternators)are three phase generates, which have a rotating field, and a stationary armature where emf induces ( armature can be rotating, but usually not using practically. ). Here the field rotates to get a varying field and the stationary armature places around it to cut the flux and EMF induces in it.There is no other case of motoring until the current direction reverses and at synchronous speed. The setup is called as synchronous generator because it work in sync to some other generator or a system. So in the whole system, each module should keep some standards ( like frequency , terminal voltage, etc…).
But the induction generator is a special running condition of induction motor.It happens When the slip of an induction motor become less than unity; that is, when speed of an induction motor increase over its assigned synchronous speed (which an induction motor can’t achieve normally when it motoring). The case is normally when the motor overhauls. For example, suppose an IM uses to drag a vehicle. When a downslope came, the speed of vehicle increased abnormally and goes over synchronous speed of that induction motor. There the machine starts to generate power to the system. The case happening is simply reverse the power from inward to outward with respect to the machine.
The main advantage of the induction generator is, need not to synchronization. It deliver the power with the same frequency as the machine is currently working in. Also, the excitation here for the generator is from the supply itself. Without supply in the line where it connected , it wont work. The main application of the induction generator is with the wind mill, where uses IM with set low synchronous speed.
