Women were chattel. They were something to be bargained with. You could marry up in society if a man of wealth wanted your daughter. Women could not be educated unless they were part of the royal court. They had to be intelligent to converse with royalty. Only courtesans were taught the arts, how to read, etiquette and so on. Those women not born to priviledge were relegated to menial and backbreaking chores. Beating clothes on rocks in the river to wash them, cooking over cauldrons and open fires. They could not own land or livestock. Shouldn't be hard to compare that to the modern life women enjoy today.
