Nervous system:

This system has network of nerves that transmits nerve impulse between parts of the body parts.

(a) Location in the body (dorsal/ventral) :

Humans:

  • The spinal cord gives rise to spinal roots which are found in the dorsal and ventral location of the body.
  • There are 31 pairs of spinal roots they are 12 thoracic, 8 cervical, 1 coccygeal, 5 sacral and 5 lumbar.
  • The corresponding dorsal and ventral roots to form spinal nerve.

Cockroach:

  • A muscular wall from the many funnelled chambers lies in the mid-dorsal and ventral region of thorax and abdomen.
  • Majority of nerves are found in ventral side of a cockroach.

(b) Parts present in the head, thorax and abdomen:

Humans:

  • Cranial nerves are found in the head region.
  • Sympathetic ganglia grouped into paravertebral and prevertebral ganglia are found in thorax and abdomen.

Cockroach:

  • Supra-oesophageal ganglion is found in the head region.
  • Three ganglia and six ganglia are in the thorax and abdomen region respectively.
