Comparison of Subsistence Farming vs Commercial Farming

1. In subsistence farming, single farmer is always involved in both crop and livestock production. But vastly it could be only crop or only livestock in the commercial farming when considering one farmer/Land owner.

2. In commercial farming, one or two crops or livestock is elected for production. But in subsistence farming variety of crops and livestock are elected.

3. Comparatively Commercial farms are much bigger than subsistence farms.

4. Output is targeted for the wholesale market, retail market, as raw materials for factories, etc in commercial farming. But, their own consumption is the target of the subsistence farming.

5. Commercial farming is profit oriented, and profit is maximized through the implementation of economics of scale. But subsistence farming is aiming at self sufficiency.

6. Commercial farming system is complex, and productivity is high. Subsistence farming system is simple, and productivity is low.

1. Primitive subsistence farming refers to the agricultural practices  that are  utilised to meet the needs of one's family.

whereas commercial farming is done to meet the commercial needs  (for exports , local markets etc..) .

2. Primitive subsistence farming does not involve any use of modern technology and uses primitive tools like hoe,dao,digging sticks etc... Whereas commercial farming involves modern technology and use of costly fertilisers.

3. cost of production is low in primitive subsistence farming but this is high in commercial farming.

4. in primitive subsistence farming, family members provide labour .In commercial type of farming, huge labour force is required (rented labour ) .

5. primitive farming is done on small patches of land whereas commercial type of farming is done on large scale.
