Non-store: Non-store formats are those forms of retailing where end users are served without meeting them in the physical store. Non-store formats are represented by catalogue and direct mail retailing, telemarketing, television home shopping, direct personal selling, vending machine selling and internet selling.

Retail stores are real shops which have stock of goods and sell them directly  to consumers who go to those shops to buy them.

Example: Big Bazaar, Star Bazaar, etc...

They are further Divided as:

1. On the Basis of Ownership

  • Independent Retailer - owns and operates only one Retail outlet that passes on from Generation to Generation.
  • Chain Retailer - owns two or more retail shops that deal with same type of goods. Ex: Food World, Shopper's Stop, etc...
  • Franchise - Its an Agreement between Franchiser and Franchisee. Franchisee can operate business in the name of the Franchiser and give Franchiser a nominal fee for operating in his name. Ex: McDonald's, Pizza Hut, etc...
  • Leased Department - Shop is rented out to some other person to conduct business in his property and pay him rent.
  • Consumer Co-Operatives - It is owned by a group of member customers who provide commodities to each other at reasonable price.

2. On the Basis of Merchandise offered

  • Departmental stores - consists of almost all needed household products under one roof.
  • Convenience stores - Small shops located in residential areas for quick purchase of most essential commodities.
  • Super Market - Large outlets with a variety of goods.
  • Hyper Market - Its a combination of Departmental stores and Super Market.
  • Specialty stores - Sells only specific goods. Ex: Mobile shops

Non-Retail stores sell goods to consumers by advertising or marketing them on TV, Internet, etc... They donot have a real shop where they would stock goods.

Example: Amazon, Flip kart, etc...

These are further divided into:

1. Direct Selling - Sales men visit homes and sell goods directly to consumers.

2. Mail order or Electronic Retailing - Type of Online Shopping where customers place order and pay online.

3. Automatic Vending Machines - Vending machines contains goods like chocolates, pizzas, etc... They are dispensed to customers when they deposit cash. This is usually seen in Airports.
