carbon has a small size than silicon so i has the ability to make more branches in the catenation process. The other reason for its higher ability is its tetra valency and the high energy bonding. Silicon is tetra valent too but n other characteristics it can not be compared to carbon

Silicon can form chains upto seven to eight atoms only while carbon can form very long chains. The compounds of silicon are not stable, since they are very reactive while the compounds of carbon formed by catenation are stable.
