We have to compare The atomic size of Cl and Cl^- ion .

We know, chlorine is very electronegative atom and it have highest electron affinity as compared to all other elements in atomic table .

Also, chlorine atom have 17 electron.

When chlorine atom gain an electron it forms Cl^- ions total number of electrons in ion increases to 18 .

After gain of electron the inter electronic repulsion between every electrons increases , which cause the increase in separation between electrons and effectively increase the atomic size of Cl^- ion .
