By 5%, it increased.

Let us consider the initial marks to be 100.

It is given that the marks  initially increased by 40%, so

Now, the marks became = (100+40)% of 100

= 140% of 100

= 140.

Next, it decreased by 25%, so the new marks would be

= (100-25)% of 140

= 75% of 140

= 105

So, overall the marks increased from 100 to 105.

Marks increase = 105-100 = 5

Marks % = (Marks increase/Initil marks)*100%

= (5/100)*100%

= 5%
