Although thermal power plants are the main source of power generation in all over the world due to easy availability of coal and gas that are used for heat generation, there are a couple of disadvantages to it when compared with the Hydroelectric power generation.

In thermal power plants, a h
uge amount of Carbon-di-oxide is produced in the atmosphere. When compared with the hydropower plants, thermal plants have an overall low efficiency, a very expensive process due to the usage of more lubricating oil, an excessive amount of water for cooling purpose.

Hydropower plants have
dams constructed through which the electricity is produced at a constant rate. If electricity is not needed, the gates can be shut to stop electricity generation. The water can be saved for use when electricity demand is high. Also, the dams are designed to last many decades and it can help in the generation of electricity for many years. The lakes behind the dam can be used for water sports and as tourist attractions. The lake's water can be used for irrigation purposes. These power plants do not produce any greenhouse gases that pollute the atmosphere.

The real-time plant load factors (PLFs) is 85% and 45% for Thermal Plants and Hydroelectric power plants, respectively.
