Answer:

What is the order of bond energy, in O-O, S-S, and Se-Se?

I believe this question is about E-E (single bond; NOT to be confused with E=E).

The order of bond energies is: S-S > Se-Se > O-O > Te-Te

The atoms with lone pairs do not have the same trend in bond length in a group, as is a case with a typical group (like group 14)

It can be seen in group 15, 16 & 17 the things are different altogether…

Two things working in opposite ways:

1. Increasing size down the group tends to make the bond weaker and weaker

2. Smaller atoms have more repulsion, due to presence of lone pair causing the bond to be relatively weaker. More the number of LP, more this repulsiv

Hello there,

Oxygen(O), sulphur(S) and selenium(Se) belong to the group 16 of the modern periodic table in 2nd, 3rd and 4rth period respectively.

The reason I mentioned periods is because as we go down a group, the size of the atom increases. So atomic radius is of the order Se>S>O. Moreover, we consider the double bond bond energy as oxygen exists in pi bonded diatomic molecules.

As the size of atoms increase, so does the size of p-orbitals, and consequently they become more diffuse. Due to this, the pi bonds formed are weaker down the group.

Hence the bond energy is maximum for O2, then S2 and lastly Se2
