The chemical reactivity of s-block elements increases as we move down a group.

  • The s-block elements are H, He, Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and group 2 elements are Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba.
  • As we move from top to bottom in group 1 the reactivity increases from Li to Cs. For example, Li slowly reacts with water, Na violently with water and Rb, Cs and K react explosively with water.
  • As we move from top to bottom in group 2 the reactivity increases from Be to Ba. For example, Be does not react with oxygen, Mg reacts with oxygen and Ca, Sr and Ba readily react with oxygen.
  • H is highly reactive due to the presence of one electron and He is an inert gas and does not react at all.
