Athenian democracy developed around the sixth century BC in the Greek city-state (known as a polis) of Athens, comprising the city of Athens and the surrounding territory of Attica. Athenian democracy is often described as the first known democracy in the world. ... Democracy was suppressed by the Macedonians in 322 BC.

The first and foremost difference between Athenian Democracy and Indian Democracy is that only men had voting rights in Greece while everyone has voting right in India. Women and slaves were not allowed to participate in democratic system nor had voting rights in Athenian Democracy.

In India, we have representative democracy while Athenian democracy was an example of direct democracy. People didn't use to vote for their representative rather they used to actively participate in decision making. Athenian democracy existed in Greece from 460 BC to 320 BC.

In the 4th and 5th centuries BC, the male citizen population of Athens ranged from 30,000 to 60,000 depending on the period. The assembly met at least once a month, more likely two or three times, on the Pnyx hill in a dedicated space which could accommodate around 6000 citizens. Any citizen could speak to the assembly and vote on decisions by simply holding up their hands. The majority won the day and the decision was final. People were paid some money to encourage people to come from farther places.

So, there are profound differences between Indian Democracy and Athenian Democracy. Athenian Democracy was not democracy in true sense as almost 50 percent of population that is entire population of women were out of this system.
