The effects of and formation on their parent metals is that they prevent it from corrosion and rusting.
- Aluminium show a higher tendency towards corrosion. Some compounds of aluminium such as aluminium oxide () is a quite hard material that preserves the compound from getting corroded any further.
- Corrosion of aluminium oxide appear similar to that of rusted iron.
- Changes in the color occur on corrosion of iron and the iron oxide usually expands. Large red flakes are produced due to expanding of color change which is referred to as rust.
Hence, corrosion of aluminum can be prevented due to aluminium oxide.
