5/8=30/48

7/12=28/48

From the above obtained fractions fraction 30/48 is greater so the fraction 5/8 is greater than 7/12

To find: Which one of the given fractions is greater than the other

Solution: The given fractions have different denominators. We can't compare fractions with different denominators.

LCM of their denominators 8 and 12 = 24

To convert these fractions with same denominators, we have

$\frac{5}{8} = \frac{5}{8}$ × $\frac{3}{3} = \frac{15}{24}$ and $\frac{7}{12} = \frac{7}{12}$ × $\frac{2}{2} = \frac{14}{24}$

Now, we can see that numerator of $\frac{15}{24}$ i.e. 15 is greater than numerator of $\frac{14}{24}$ i.e. 14, where the denominators of both the fractions are equal.

Hence, $\frac{15}{24} \ i.e. \ \frac{5}{8}$ is greater than $\frac{14}{24} \ i.e. \ \frac{7}{12}$.
