Well, Obviously it will be the sun because mass of the moon is negligible compared to the sun. So, the Gravitational force exerted by the sun on the Earth is great than the moon on the Earth.

As F is directly proportional to the Mass and inversely proportional to the distance. M(sun)>> M(moon)

Mass of the earth, M = 6 x 1024kg

Mass of the sun, Ms = 2 x 1030kg

Mass of the moon, Mm= 7.3 x 1022kg

Distance of Earth from the sun, rs= 1.5x 10^11m

Distance of Earth from the moon, rm= 3.84 x 10^8 m

Thus the sun exerts force, about 180 times the force exerted by the moon on the earth.

Answer:

Sol. If mass of sun is Ms

and mass of earth is Me

and distance between the sun and earth is rse,

then force exerted by the sun on earth is

Fs

GM M ...(1)

Similarly, if mass of moon is Mm, mass of

earth is Me, the distance between moon and

earth is rme, then force exerted by moon on

the earth is

Fm = 2

GM M ...(2)

Dividing equation (1) by equation (2), we get
