⇛The image of Bharat Mata and Germanias became the allegory of India and the German nation respectively.

They were created to give the abstract idea of the nation a concrete form and create an image with which people could identify and unify. Devotion to the figure by the peopie in their respective countries came to be seen as evidence of nationalism

This image of Bharat Mata was painted by Abanindranath Tagore consequent to the Swadeshi Movement.

★Bharat Mata was portraited as an ascetic figure, calm, composed, divine and spiritual dispensing learning, food and clothing-all the qualities regarded as essential in every lndian woman. In subsequent years the image of Bharat Mata acquired many different forms. eg she is shown with a trishul, standing behind a lion and an elephant-both symbols of power and authority-this change was reflective of change in the role of women

The idea of sacrifice and devotion to the mother meaning the nation was popularised

through these images.

★The image of Germanias was created during the revolution of 1848. Germanias is represented as wearing a crown of oak leaves as in Germany oak stands for heroism. The unsheathed sword signified readiness to fight.

•The breast plate with eagle-a symbol of German empire and strength.

•The olive branch around the sword proclaimed willingness to make peace

•The black, red and gold tricolour was the flag banned by the Dukes of German states

•The broken chain signified being freed and the rays of the rising sun, beginning of a new era.
