Matilda was a very ambitious and aspiring lady. She had so many desires and wishes to be fulfilled. She had wished to be married to a rich man to enjoy the luxuries of life. She had desired to wear dainty, elegant dresses, live in a palatial mansion with all the facilities, servants and maids waiting on her.
Matilda’s Reality
Matilda was married to a clerk at the Ministry of Public Instruction who could not satisfy Matilda’s all desires for elegant and luxurious life-style. Matilda remained in constant anguish on account of this. The poor house she lived in, ugly walls needing painting, old curtains, worn out furniture reminded her of her poverty.
